LISTENING POST

Mike Harding

Within the metropolitan area of London, select, record and describe a suitable LISTENING POST (in contrast to viewpoints of scenic vistas, with car parks, telescopes and waste bins). It could be an audio oasis or parenthesis to escape the urban audio assault, or it could be an enclosed space with peculiar acoustics. The aim is to encourage engagement and thereby involvement, with your urban area by LISTENING, which is the essential forerunner (and possible substitute) for any audio recording.

Mike will introduce the morning and play recent works by BJNilsen and Jana Winderen, amongst others, whose recent works have described contrasting areas of spaces, one urban the other invisible.

From midday to 3pm, students will be ‘on location’ before re-assembling to discuss their experiences.

Noises Festival @ b-05, Montabaur | Saturday 15th June 2013

20:45 – 21:15 Vortrag: Mike Harding (Touch): From Analogue To Digital And Back Again

The /ˈnɔɪzɪz/ festival is taking place from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th June at the grounds of the b-05 Montabaur choosing as its theme the intercultural relevance of hearing as a multi-medial phenomenon. The festival is an initiative organised by Cultural Science students at the University of Koblenz.

The starting point is that globalisation in mass media is frequently only perceived as an economic rather than a cultural phenomenon which may be interpreted differently depending on the location. Above all hearing – hence the phonetic title – will be emphasised with DJ-sets, live-music, films and performances.

In addition the use of a silent disco, sound-installations, presentations and workshops demonstrate that ‘noise’ is interpreted differently – either subjectively or culturally – within the realms of sound in general or music in particular.

Mike Harding is giving a talk about 30 years of Touch on Saturday night.

Touch.30 | January to December 2012

Touch’s first release was Feature Mist [T1] in December 1982, so 2012 is our 30th anniversary. There will be a series of events and releases throughout the year and this page will be regularly updated to keep you informed. You may have noticed that Touch.20 was held in 2001, and Touch 25 in 2006… A discrepancy you might think. But no! Touch was conceived by Jon Wozencroft in 1981, in 1982 Jon and Mike Harding went to see New Order in Norwich (May) and received the cassette master of “Video 5-8-6” which was released on Feature Mist…
