The Crossing Point
Hosted by Mike Harding & Bana Haffar, who provided the image.
“The image of “The Crossing Point” comes from studies of projective geometry and plant growth. I could put it most simply this way: in the plant there is a layer –– sometimes only one cell wide –– between the tissue of the root and the shoot. It is a crossing point between earth and sun. Below, the root hairs grow out of the dense core –– think of a beet or a dandelion –– the gesture of the form radiates from a mid-point outward. Above, the foliage arises out of a hollow, drawn by the sun from the periphery. The movement resembles the figure-of-eight, or Moebus strip, where what was enclosed and digging down turns into what is open and lifting up. And vice versa. The two realms are an organic breathing continuum. The geometric form is the lemniscate. (ix). [M.C. Richards “The Crossing Point” 1973]
